HYPERBARIC OXYGEN TREATMENT INDICATIONS

Decompression sickness

Air or gas embolism

Clostridial myonecrosis (gas gangrene) and other and other anaerob infections

Severe carbonmonoxide poisoning

Crush injury, compartment syndrome and other acute traumatic ischemias

Refractory osteomyelitis

Chronic wounds

Osteoradionecrosis and radiation tissue infection and necrosis

Thermal burns

Compromised skin grafts and flaps (hair planting and etc…)

Intracranial abscess

Sudden loss of vision (occlusion of central artery of retina)

Sudden hear loss (must start first one month)

Femur head avascular necrosis (early stage)

SIDE EFFECTS

Side effects due to pressure change

– Middle ear barotrauma

Sinus pain

 – Pulmonary barotrauma (pneumothorax, arterial gas embolism and etc…)

Side effects due to oxygen toxicity

Temporary myopia

– seizure

– pulmonary toxity

NUMBER OF SESSIONS TO BE APPLIED

Number of sessions vary with the illness and the conditions of the patients. (For example, 1 session is adequate for carbon monoxide poisoning while up to 80 sessions may be needed for osteomyelitis petients).

PRE AND POST OPERATION PROCESSES TO BE APPLIED TO PATIENT DURING THE TIME IN HOSPITAL

Patients are first examined by the expert doctors in terms of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Then, if they are suitable, necessary medical examinations are conducted and the treatment begins. While chest graphy is enough for some patients, for some lung CT is necessary.
